Coat is red fawn, sesame (red fawn hairs with black tips), brindle or white. All colours except white must have urajiro (white coat on the sides of the muzzle, cheeks, underside of the jaw, neck, chest, body and tail and on the inside of the legs).

The breed is very adaptable and is therefore capable of a wide range of roles, including that of a guard dog, hunter, police dog and most importantly, family dog. Majestic in appearance, extremely intelligent, courageous but careful, faithful and highly devoted to his owner, the Akita makes a good companion.

The Akita is dignified and reserved, but courageous and fearless. Very affectionate toward his family and loyal to his owner, he thrives on companionship. The breed is respected for being extremely faithful, a dependable breed who is very protective of his family.
