Their caring instinct has led to reports of them saving their owner's life: on one occasion, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever steadied itself in readiness to take the weight of its owner and drag her to safety from a crumbling rock ledge.

They are always willing to play and, loyal to their retrieving background, they will fetch a ball anytime it is thrown for them.
