Xolo (Mexican Hairless Dog)

The Xolo is one of the oldest and rarest breeds in the world and comes in two varieties – hairless and coated. Considered sacred by the Aztecs and believed to have a healing gift, it is still considered by many in Mexico to possess the ability to restore health.

Coat
Hairless variety - total lack of hair on the body (hairless or nude dog) although there are some short, coarse thick hairs on the forehead and back of the neck. It is common to find rough hair on the feet and on the end of the tail.
Coated variety - hair all over its body. It can be expected to have very little hair on its belly and inside the rear legs.

This intelligent, alert and active breed is generally very quiet and loving towards its family and has proven popular as an obedience dog, therapy dog and companion.
Temperament
The Xolo is extremely intelligent and quick to learn. Lively and alert, the Xolo is generally quiet in the home, making a loyal and loving companion. The large and intermediate Xolos are watchdogs and the miniature is an excellent companion. They are generally suspicious of strangers but should not be aggressive. They require sensitive handling and training should be consistent and positive. Early socialisation is recommended.
